Zábojova Kostka

Very Rare Wondrous Item

Záboj was an extraordinary if somewhat eccentric wizard, who spent decades creating rewarding arcane puzzles and riddles to test the wits of others. This rotating puzzle cube is one of his most famous and genius inventions – enchanted with various powerful incantations that only take effect when its runes are arranged in a specific pattern and order. Several patterns and orders have been discovered and made public knowledge, but others are kept secret by a handful of solvers, and many have probably never been solved yet. It is widely accepted that most of the cube’s secret powers are still yet to be found.

When you attempt to arrange a specific pattern, you need to use your action while holding the cube in both hands and succeed on an Intelligence ability check. Some patterns require several actions and successful checks in a row. All required actions must be done within 1 minute, otherwise the cube and all the spent actions reset.

Following are the generally known patterns, including their DCs and actions required to solve them.

  • The Classic (DC 6 – 1 Action). You cast the Prestidigitation spell using the item.
  • Charmer’s Glamour (DC 9 – 1 Action). You gain advantage on your next Charisma ability check made within the next minute.
  • Wizard’s Wings. (DC 13 – 1 Action). You gain 60 ft. of flying speed until the end of your next turn.
  • Party Pleaser (DC 13 – 1 Action). You cast the Pyrotechnics (DC 13) spell using the item.
  • Spell Fountain. (DC 18 – 1 Action). When you assemble this pattern, you may expend a spell slot of 5th level or lower to store inside the cube. If a spell slot is already stored inside, you can expend it to cast any spell you know using it.
  • Solver’s Crutch. (DC 8 – 2 Actions). You gain a +5 bonus on your next Intelligence check made within the next minute.
  • Vox/Auris (DC 10 – 2 Actions). Two reverse patterns the powers of which are connected to each other.
Assembling the Vox pattern allows you to record all sounds made within 30 ft. of you for 1 minute.
Assembling the Auris pattern allows you to repeat the sounds captured by the last Vox pattern. The sounds are amplified, and even whispers can be heard clearly as normal speech.
  • Penfriend’s Friend. (DC 13 – 2 Actions). You cast the Sending spell using the item.
  • Thorny Spring. (DC 15 – 2 Actions). You regain 5d10 Hit Points. You can’t regain Hit Points from this feature again until you finish a short rest.
  • Teleportation Conundrum. (DC 16 – 3 Actions). You cast the Teleport spell using the item. This pattern needs time to recharge, assembling it again within 24 hours of its last use only creates the effects of the Dimension Door spell.

Failing the check to assemble a pattern makes you take 3d10 force damage. This damage cannot be reduced in any way.
