Rare Wondrous Item (Book)

While holding this book, you can spend 10 minutes drawing a specific creature that you have seen onto one of its pages. If you succeed on a Dexterity (Painter’s Supplies) check, the drawing of the creature will start to shift and move, doing exactly what its template is doing at the time.

• The creature on the drawing must be recognizable without lacking any distinctive physical feature.
  (For example If the creature has lost an arm, and the drawing depicts them with both hands, the effect will not work.)

The base DC of the Dexterity (Painter’s Supplies) check is 20, but it can changed by the following modifiers: 

• You know the creature intimately and have spent a lot of time with them: –1-10 DC depending on the time and quality of time spend, decided by GM. 
• You have only seen the creature depicted on a painting, statue, or a different faithful representative element: +1-10 DC depending on the quality and faithfulness of the depiction, decided by GM.
• You have personally seen the creature in the last 24 hours: -5 DC
• You are directly looking at the creature: -15 DC
• You haven’t seen the creature or their depiction for 7 days: +2 to DC for every 7 days. 
• The creature is on another plane of existence: +5 DC
• The creature is shapeshifted: +10 DC, and the drawing transforms into the shapeshifted form while the creature is shapeshifted. 

On a success, the drawing will copy all of the creature’s movements and actions, but anything they are wearing or interacting with will not be depicted, unless it was already included in the drawing.
The effect lasts for 12 hours or until you succeed on the check to make another living drawing.   

• If you succeed on the check by 5 or more, the drawing will depict any items, objects or clothing that the creature is currently wearing or interacting with.
• If you succeed by 10 or more, the drawing will depict everything currently within 30 feet of the affected creature.  

On a failure, the affected creature is immune to the effects for 24 hours. 
Short. Nothing is more reassuring to an adventurer, than making sure their loved ones are safe and sound. Sometimes all it requires is an artist’s steady hand.
