Legendary Wondrous Item (Quill/Painter’s Supplies), Requires Proficiency with Painter’s Supplies, Requires Attunement
The Quill of the Creator is the legendary upgraded version of the Quill of the Imaginist, its basic effects are enhanced, allowing it to create phenomenal life-like illusions on an enormous scale. It also gains the Living Ink and Creator features, allowing you to create living paintings and even creatures.
- This quill produces its own ink and you can change the ink’s colour at will.
- When used as part of Painter’s Supplies, it gives a +6 bonus on ability checks made with them.
Mind’s Eye Canvas. This quill allows you to paint on the space around you as if it was an invisible magical canvas, creating harmless illusions and changes in perception. As an action, you can create one of the following effects on a target that you can see.
- Colour me Impressed. You change the colour of a single target within range.
If you succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity (Painter’s Supplies) check after spending at least 1 minute using this action on a single creature, surface or object, you are able to create intricate patterns and colour combinations on the target making them more appealing or impressive giving a +5 bonus to charisma checks while wearing or somehow utilizing the target. Any creature that comes within 10 feet of the target must make a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw, becoming charmed by them for 1 hour, until the target attempts to do anything harmful to them, or until the effect ends on a failure.
- Maestro’s Signature. You write a word or paint a symbol on any object, creature or surface that you can see. The symbol or word will be invisible or unreadable to any creatures or types of creatures you specify.
This effect can be used on the sky or on any major landscape that you can see, giving it the effects of the Skywrite spell.
- Artistic License. You create a small static illusory effect anywhere within range. This can include horns on someone’s head, a prolonged nose, a hole in the ground, or anything within reason.
If you succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity (Painter’s Supplies) check after spending at least 1 minute using this action on a single creature, you can change their real form, allowing you to create the effects of the Polymorph or Alter Self spells on them.- If you spend 10 minutes and succeed on a DC 20 Dexterity (Painter’s Supplies) check, you can create an illusory phenomenon that will affect the area that you can see within 1 mile of you, and all creatures inside this area. This can include illusory storms, snowfall, or can be used to turn the day into night, covering the area in darkness for all creatures inside the area.
Physical interaction with the features will not reveal them to be illusions, if a creature uses their action to examine one of these illusions. The illusions appear completely real, including sound, smell and temperature. A successful DC 20 Intelligence (Investigation) check will allow them to recognize the illusion and see through it.
The illusion functions as the Phantasmal Force spell if it’s meant to appear harmful or dangerous, but each time a creature takes damage from it, they can repeat the ability check to see through the illusion.
If you use Mind’s Eye Canvas on an unwilling creature or on anything they are currently wielding or wearing, make a Charisma (Painter’s Supplies) check, and the target must make a Wisdom saving throw with DC equal to the rolled amount, becoming immune to Mind’s Eye Canvas for 24 hours on a success.
The features created by Mind’s Eye Canvas last as long as they are within your line of sight. You can also decide to use a small bit of your life-force to sustain the illusions, expending one of your Hit Dice to make an effect last for 12 hours.
Living Ink. In the hands of a talented artist, things painted by this Quill can literally come to life. If you spend at least 1 hour creating a painting with this quill and succeed on a DC 20 Dexterity (Painter’s Supplies) check, the features on the painting start moving and acting as if they were real. The magic will run out and the features on the painting will become ordinary and static after 24 hours, but you can use your action to touch a living painting with the Quill and expend one of your Hit Dice to expend the duration by 12 hours.
Creator. You can use your action to touch a creature depicted on one of your moving paintings made with Living Ink. You immediately lose an amount of Hit Dice equal to that creature’s CR (But a minimum of 2, even if the CR is lower), and the creature emerges from the painting, becoming a fully animated Living Ink Creature created from the ink itself, and becoming ink again when it dies.
- Any expended Hit Dice cannot be regained as long as the Living Ink Creature is alive
- If you lose more Hit Dice than you currently have from this feature, you roll each of the extra hit die and lose an amount of Maximum and Current Hit Points equal to the amount rolled + your Constitution modifier for each die rolled this way.
The Maximum Hit points can’t be regained in any ways as long as the Living Ink Creature is alive.
- The Living Ink Creature has the exact same statistics and powers as the creature it represents, but it is a Construct and cannot regain Hit Points in any way. It plays on its own initiative and you do not directly control its actions in combat.
The creature cannot benefit from any learnt powers, making it unable to use non-innate spellcasting or class features.
It behaves like an exemplary member of its species and obeys your every verbal command (Intelligent creatures might be displeased by this and try to betray you or trick you).
- The creature cannot talk, but understands all languages you know, or any languages the creature it represents would know.
- The Living Ink Creature disappears if you are incapacitated or if it is brought to 0 Hit Points. When it disappears, you gain a level of Exhaustion if its CR was 5 or more, repeated for CR 10, 15 and 20.
Creator’s Curse (For DM only)
Each time you create a Living Ink Creature the DM rolls a D20. If the DM rolls less than the creature’s CR/2, the creature will not obey your commands and considers you their mortal enemy – doing everything in their power to kill you. This Living Ink Creature does not disappear when you are incapacitated.
- Hatred from Beyond the Grave.
- If attempting to summon a Living Ink Creature kills you, the Creator’s Curse automatically activates and the creature is still summoned. You cannot be restored to life as long as this Living Ink Creature is alive.
